Paradise Bowls is a new, trendy snack destination that serves acai and pitaya bowls. It is located in both Manhattan Beach and Hermosa Beach and has become a staple snack in these health-conscious beach cities, selling for both its delicious, and nutritious qualities. The bowls consist of a sorbet-like base and additional healthy toppings consisting of super fruits and/or surprisingly healthy dessert-like alternatives such as cacao nibs. The majority of the ingredients in these delicious bowls are healthy and natural.

Surprisingly, there has been some controversy about whether the product’s true nutritional value fulfills the company’s claim to wholesome goodness. There is no question that the various fruits contained in each bowl provide the consumer with considerable amounts of antioxidants. However, with some research, it can be found that this enjoyable alternative may not be as guilt-free as one may think. The eatery’s popular “Manhattan Peach” bowl contains roughly 600 calories in a size small. Though the calorie count itself is not to be of concern, one can question the reason behind such a high caloric amount for a supposedly “healthy” product. Upon inspection, it can be found that the blended acai base contains apple juice concentrate, which is high in sugar. Furthermore, the granola topping sprinkled onto the base is full of added sugars and oils, which in themselves are not to be feared or avoided at all costs, but can be unhealthy if consumed excessively.

These Paradise Bowls are great sources of antioxidants, and can be wonderful healthier alternatives to your average hot fudge sundae or slice of chocolate cake. However, they are still just a treat. An acai bowl cannot act as a replacement for the fruits and vegetables that are necessary for a healthy diet, but it sure can satisfy a craving for something tasty!
