Sailors for Service Leads Sandwich Builders

On Saturday, November 15, the Marymount Sailors for Service held their first all-community event supporting Sandwich Builders. The event was hosted by the Sailors for Service Student Board and led by Sarah Burgess ’15 and Clare Burgess ’16. The day consisted of filling up lunch bags and creating prayer cards, which were then delivered by Marymount staff and students themselves to six different locations within the Los Angeles community including the Valley, West Hollywood, Venice, Santa Monica, Downtown, and Inglewood.

The event was held in the Dining Room, which was divided into five sections: sandwich bagging, sandwich making, a lunch bag assembly line, card making, and lunch boxing and counting. Each station moved efficiently and quickly, resulting in an earlier finish than expected. The event ended at 11 a.m. rather than at noon, allowing volunteers to distribute the lunches earlier and really experience the act of giving back to the community.

The service event successfully distributed over 1,000 lunches, which was more than the original goal. In addition to this surpassing amount, there was a great turnout of over 100 volunteers. Volunteers not only included students and faculty of Marymount, but family, friends, students from Verbum Dei, and a volunteer group from Lion’s Heart as well. Board member Clare Burgess, overjoyed by the success, said, “Many people came and seemed really focused on making as many lunches as possible. We actually made so many lunches that we ran out of supplies and I had to go to the store to get more!”

The Sailors for Service Committee is continuously planning more future community events, so stay on the lookout for more information. Congratulations to Mrs. Bostic and Sailors for Service Marymount on such an amazing and unifying event!
