The start of a New Year is a wonderful thing: it gives people the chance to reevaluate their previous year, while also offering them the opportunity to achieve new goals that they set for the upcoming year. Almost everyone fabricates a “New Year’s resolution” for themself, and I’m sure you have too. But be honest- how often have you actually kept to your resolution? If the answer is “not very often” or “never,” don’t worry, you are not the only one. Every year people struggle to maintain the goals that they set for themselves. This is because, more often than not, people’s ambitions drive them to setting unattainable goals. Although it may seem hard to try and keep to a New Year’s resolution, it is possible for every person to achieve their goal.  By following these tips, you can be one step closer to fulfilling your New Year’s resolution.

  1. Set manageable goals. If your goal is unrealistic, you are setting yourself up for failure. Instead, reach for something that is realistic and attainable. That way, you are much more likely to get to where you want to go, and will feel great in the process.
  2. Set short-term goals. Short-term goals are easier to keep, and with each success, you will be more motivated to continue on with your resolution. By keeping to your smaller, short-term goals, you can easily achieve something much bigger in the long term.
  3. Find a friend with similar goals. Having a partner will keep you motivated, and will also offer you support and keep you accountable when you think you might give up. Having someone to check in with will also keep you focused on the task at hand.
  4. Set goals that are meaningful. Rather than trying to complete something you “should” do, try doing something that you truly want to do. If there is intention and significance behind your resolution, you will be more determined to keep it.
  5. Be patient. Change does not happen overnight. To truly succeed, you will need to be patient with yourself, and remain consistent and determined, even if you do not gain immediate gratification in your journey. The results will come eventually, but until then, try to enjoy the process.
