Valentine’s Day: Is it Overrated?

There are two kinds of people in this world: people in relationships and people who are single. Therefore, Valentine’s Day can bring up mixed emotions, prompting the question: is Valentine’s Day out of hand?

Walking into your local grocery store, the endless aisles of Valentine Cards, boxes of chocolate, and flowers seem to mock you as you search for your single-serving box of frozen mac and cheese. Although Valentine’s Day provides an excuse for couples to have a romantic night out, the reality is, for all the singles out there, Valentine’s Day is a major letdown. What’s the point of having a holiday that only couples can celebrate?

And why should love only be celebrated on one day out of the year anyway? The fact that there is only a single specified day associated with love and romance indicates that love should not be celebrated year round, as it should be!

Love doesn’t just have to refer to romance either. There are plenty of people that you love and can show appreciation for in your life. Even if you don’t have a significant other, Valentine’s Day is an opportunity to show someone that you care about him or her, whether that be a family member or a friend.

Let me be clear by saying that what Valentine’s Day is celebrating is not overrated at all; however, the stereotype that it only applies to couples and the stigma that comes along with being single on that day makes the holiday seem pointless.

Valentine’s Day shouldn’t put pressure on you to find a date or feel self-conscious about not having one. Unfortunately, the holiday is slightly over-advertised, seeing as it only caters to people in relationships, but there is no reason not to embrace it anyway and enjoy the company of your loved ones.
