Globally, Covid-19 cases have reached an all-time low and continue to fall. Unfortunately, covid cases are on the rise again in Europe with a total of 1.5 million cases, an uptake of 8% from last week. More specifically, in Italy, hospital admissions of people with covid-like symptoms rose to 32% and the admissions in the intensive care units are up 21% in comparison to previous weeks. Though hospitalizations have been increasing, the pandemic has been able to remain stable and manageable. The highest rates in the European Union have been from Austria, France, Germany, Latvia, and Liechtenstein. Britain has seen a 45% hospitalization increase because of a passive push for boosters. Numerous people with Covid fatigue and insufficient resources are causing people to not pay as much attention to the latest vaccines. Overall, rates for vaccinations in the EU have fallen from 6-10 million, last year, to only 1.8 million.

Typically, pandemic surges happen in Europe, then spread to the United States via the East Coast and continue throughout America. There is concern that this pattern will continue because Covid booster shots are so limited. Less than four percent of the elderly, immune-compromised, and eligible patients have gotten the second Covid-19 booster in America. The daily average of new covid cases in the US has fallen to a daily average of 42,000. In LA county, there has been an additional 3,076 new cases and the seven-day average is up to 4.5 percent. Clearly, cases are increasing because there aren’t enough citizens getting vaccinated, and as a result, city officials must take action to control the upcoming surge.
