Service is an important part of the community at Marymount. Every year, each grade takes part in at least one service project. The freshmen work to help support families involved with A Place Called Home, a non-profit youth center in South Central Los Angeles, and prepare care packages. The sophomores collaborate with the staff at A Place Called Home to plan their annual spring health and garden fair. The juniors select different service organizations to learn about their missions and programs; they work with the organizations and present their experiences at the annual Kingdom Fair. The seniors work with human rights projects, especially on women and children throughout the world. During class retreats, the freshmen visited A Place Called Home for the first time and had the opportunity to learn about what it was. They experienced a variety of classes that were available for the kids, such as dance and art. The sophomores visited the Los Angeles Food Bank and aided in packaging over 20,000 pounds of food and supplies for those in need. On Thursday, September 25, some students visited A Place Called Home during Period 9 to help with their gardening project. The students helped pick seeds from basil, which were to be packaged and passed out to families. They also went out to the playground and played sports with the kids. If you would like to help others and support your community, please consider joining the Service Board. The Service Board meets every Thursday during lunch in B-204 and will be planning several service activities during P9 or outside of school!
