Shoe Trends of 2021: Loafers, Converse, and Retro Revival

Paige Kun '24, Staff Writer

With the return of more in-person activities like work or school, stylish shoes are a necessity. Throwing on a pair of flip-flops to run an errand and not having to worry about shoes for a Zoom class or meeting is out, whereas flaunting the newest shoe trends is in. Inspired by past shoe trends, here are the current ones you’ve seen everywhere and will be seeing more of in the future.

Loafers

The recent resurgence of loafers has proved that these classic shoes aren’t just for the workplace anymore (or dress uniform days). While loafers date back to the 1950s, they are just as chic in 2021. Many celebrities have been spotted lately sporting loafers of all kinds. Try different colored loafers, like black or burgundy, loafers with a platform sole, or loafers with gold embellishments. They can be worn with a variety of outfits, dressy and casual. The 70 year old trend of loafers is back, so be sure to buy a pair.

Converse

Although Chuck Taylors were at their primetime in the 1980’s and 1990’s, they continue to be one of the most worn shoes today. The high-top style is particularly popular, although, Converse makes low-top styles as well. The canvas high-top shoe with the signature “Converse All Star” logo exudes simplicity and is also very versatile. These cult-favorite kicks come in an assortment of colors and prints, ranging from the basic black or white to animal print. They now also come in different styles, like platform and rubber soles. But there’s no shame in sticking to the effortlessly stylish and original Chucks that can be worn along with almost any outfit. Wear them with a dress or wear them with jeans, they’ll look great with anything!

Retro Sneakers

From Adidas to Nike to New Balance, sneakers influenced by trends of the 70’s and 80’s are making a comeback. Velcro straps, funky colors, and chunky soles are among these trends. Many celebrities have been spotted wearing these throwback shoes, and you can wear them too! Specific styles like the Adidas Forum 84 and the Nike Cortez undeniably radiate 70’s and 80’s vibes, while being relatively simple and able to be worn with all types of outfits. If you’re looking for something a bit more flashy and colorful, try the Nike Daybreak style, which comes in a variety of fun colors, or the New Balance 574 Classic. Wearing old-school shoes is in now, so hop on the trend!

… My Take on These Trends

Of these 3 main shoe trends, my favorite has to be Converse. I have been wearing them ever since I was in Kindergarten, and have always had a pair in my shoe collection. They truly can go with any outfit and come in so many colors and prints. Right now, my favorite styles are the platform leopard print high-tops and the classic white high-tops. I think that because Converse are so versatile and diverse in their styles, they will never go out of style, at least not anytime soon. While loafers and retro-style shoes are arguably just as chic, Converse are definitely more popular among the younger demographic. Converse are perfect for school, which is typically a big selling point. I’m going to continue to wear my favorite Converse, and I believe that these timeless shoes are here to stay.
