Bored over the weekend? Here’s a suggestion: go on a hike! Although Los Angeles is a city with busy streets, plenty of cars, and a flurry of businesses, hiking is still a very popular activity. One wouldn’t expect too many opportunities to get out into the wilderness and enjoy a hike; however, there are countless places in and around LA where you can become one with nature.

In fact, there are hiking trails everywhere from Malibu to the Hollywood Hills, down to Palos Verdes, and even back up to the San Gabriel Valley. There are opportunities to explore places in almost everyone’s backyard. The great thing about LA is that hiking isn’t limited to mountainous trails, but spots can also be found along the beaches, in canyons, and by waterfalls.

In Malibu, you can load up the car with your family, including the dog! Many spots in Malibu, like the well-known Solstice Canyon, offer breathtaking views of the ocean. Not only will you love the sights, but your furry buddy can also cool off in the creek at the end of the trail. On the other hand, if you prefer to hike alone or with friends along a beach, Point Dume State Beach is found on the coast of Malibu and forms the northern end of Santa Monica Bay.

Hollywood Hills, one of the most “touristy” sites, offers an up-close view of the symbolic landmark, the Hollywood Sign, on Mount Lee. Again, man’s best friend can tag along on this hike.

Next, lets take a ride down the freeway to the stunning cliffs of Palos Verdes: an island oasis where you can experience rolling hills and canyons on multi-use trails, like the Portuguese Bend Reserve. Another place, named Del Cerro Park, presents a landscaped site and play area atop a bluff with views of the coastline and the famous Catalina Island.

Heading North towards the San Gabriel Valley, Los Pinetos Trail leads hikers to a rare sighting of a waterfall and a wooded park. This is an easy hike for beginners as it is mostly flat and there is plenty of shade along the way.

Now, you’re probably wondering: “how does one prepare for a hike?” First, get on the Internet and Google what type of hike you want to take. Are you a beginner or are you looking for a real challenge? Once you pick your desired destination, map out the trail so you don’t get lost! Make sure you have shoes that are sturdy and thick with good traction. In addition, dress appropriately for the outdoor activity based on the temperature. Protect yourself with SPF, lip balm, and sunglasses. Bring a small first aid kit, maybe even the emergency one found in your car and enough food and water. Hydration and nutrition are essential for the hike. If you follow all these guidelines and pick the right hiking spot for your personal abilities and desire, you will be sure to have a fantastic, relaxing, and fun-filled experience!
